How to Solve a Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube 3x3 howto guide for beginners - fast and easy.
Lesson duration: 45 minutes | 7 steps

7 steps

yellow cross in the 1st layer
corners in the 1st layer - complete the layer
edges in the middle layer
white cross in the last layer
edges permutation in the last layer
corners permutation in the last layer
corners orientation in the last layer

Attention

Your cube can be disassembled apart and assembled incorrectly like this

In this case, you do not solve the cube with formulas. We strongly recommend you to disassemble cube apart and reassemble it by color mechanically.
Basic concepts
Get to know your 3x3 Rubik's Cube. To successfully solve your first Rubik's cube, we need to know how its elements are called and how they are moving. So,
the Rubik's Cube Elements:
Centers of the Rubiks Cube
Centers of the cube
6 pcs. One sticker, one color. Centers do not move relative to each other.
Edges of the Rubiks Cube
Edges of the cube
12 pcs. Edge elements have 2 stickers, 2 colors.
Corners of the Rubiks Cube
Corners of the cube
Corner elements have 3 stickers, 3 colors.
Core of the Rubiks Cube
Core of the cube
Centers are rigidly secured to the core and can't be moved.
Sides of the Rubik's Cube - 9 elements you turn simultaneously
Up, upper side of the Rubiks Cube
U - Up, upper side
also used D
for Down, bottom side.
of the Rubiks Cube.
L - Left side
on your left hand.
of the Rubiks Cube
F - Front side
face to you.
of the Rubiks Cube
R - Right side
on your right hand.
Move notation
All turns are made at 90 clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Left and Right turn of the Rubiks Cube
R - turn right side at 90 clockwise
L - turn left side at 90 clockwise
Up and Down turn of the Rubiks Cube
U - turn upper side at 90 clockwise
D - turn downside at 90 clockwise
Front or Face turn of the Rubiks Cube
F - turn face side at 90 clockwise.
counterclockwise turns of the Rubiks Cube.
' - prime symbol indicates that the rotation is counterclockwise.
TIP: turn your cube so the side is face to you to orient in the direction of rotation - clockwise or counterclockwise. Further, in the formulas will also use the notation R2, U2, F2 ... - which means turning 2 times, i.e. 180.
The first "magic" formula R' D' R D - Check it!
First combination for the Rubiks Cube
Find the red-blue-yellow corner. Take the cube so the corner was right at the top. Pay attention to the center of the cube, which is faced to you (we have it yellow).
First combination for the Rubiks Cube
R' D' R D
do this combination and see the result. Our corner goes down. Yellow (in our case), the yellow center still looks at us - keep it in this position
First combination for the Rubiks Cube
R' D' R D
make this combination again and check the result. Our corner jumped up, but now he has changed his orientation
First combination for the Rubiks Cube
Conclusion: angle jumps up and down and turns different colors. If you make a combination of 4 more times (6 in total) we come to the original situation. Try it!
Step 1: the Yellow Cross
You need to collect a yellow cross on the upper side - Figure 1.

the goal
Attention! Not just a yellow cross on top! Second color of the edge element has to fit its center: red to red, blue to blue, etc.
find edge
Lets start with the blue-yellow edge. Find it and place the cube blue center to you and yellow center on the top.
lift it down
First step - turn the side with the edge so it go down to the bottom side. In our case we need to do R
move to its center
Second step - turn the downside so our edge will come under blue center. Here we need to do D'

lift it up
Third step - turn the face side to lift the edge on its place. We need to do F2. That's it but..
F U' R U
..we can find the situation where the edge has placed "contrary". To complete the case try
F U' R U
next edge
Turn the cube next (red) color to you and place the Yellow-Red edge in the same way. Then Yellow-Green and Yellow-Orange.
R' D' R
Combination that lift down the next edge and do not damage the edges already solved.
Step 2 - the Corners of the 1st layer
Placing 4 corners on its places and complete the 1st layer

the goal
All edges and corners of the first layer are on their places
find Y-R-B corner
Holding the cube with Yellow center on top and looking for Yellow-Red-Blue corner. It is on the down side here
R' D' R D
Lift it down if you found it on the top with R' D' R D
R' D' R D
Turn Down so the Y-R-B corner is under its place. Then do the "magic" formula until it goes on its place in right position.
So, the first layer strategy is to lift down an element, move it under its place and jump it up with formula.
Step 3 - solving the middle layer of the Rubiks Cube
We need to place 4 edge elements on their places in the middle layer.

the goal
4 edge elements on their places in the second layer
upside down
Now the white center is on top and the solved yellow side is down. We will hold the cube such way to the end
green to green
We need any edge without white color on top of the cube. F.e. Green-Orange edge. Turn Up so green on the edge match green center
orange to orange
Cannot match Green? Then match orange to orange! So we have 2 positions..

U' L' U L
U F U' F'

The edge jumps down and left.
Holding the cube with white on top and green to you
U R U' R'
U' F' U F

The edge jumps down and right.
Holding the cube with white on top and orange to you
push with
U R U' R' U' F' U F

the edge is not on top? push it with any edge from the top and it comes on top! Smart?
push with
U R U' R' U' F' U F

the same situation - you know what to do!
Step 4 - white cross in the last layer
Look on the top of the cube and find the white colors. There are 4 situations: "Dot" - white center only, "Corner", "Line" or "Cross". If you have another situation - your cube was incorrectly assembled, see "Attention" on the top of the article.

24
F R U R' U' F'
"Dot" became a "Corner" after the combination. Then go on and do the "Line" with the same formula
F R U R' U' F'
"Corner" became a "Line"
Hold the cube with axis of the corner to the left and out of you
F R U R' U' F'
"Line" became a "Cross"
Hold the cube with the line from left to right
this is the goal
Of course you may have the cross from the beginning. Lucky kid! Go to the next step.
Step 5 - permutation of the edge elements in the last layer.
You may notice the colors of the edge elements do not match the Red Blue Green and Orange centers. Lets fix it.

Turn upper side
try positioning 2 edge elements so they match color of the centers from the middle layer
R U R' U R U2 R'
Opposite position
2 "good" edges are in front of each other. Do the combination, no matter how to hold the cube, just white center on top! You will find Corner position.
R U R' U R U2 R'
Corner position
2 "good" edges are making corner. Hold the cube with axis of the corner to the left and out of you and swap 2 other edges.
The goal
All edges match the colors of the centers of the middle layer.
Step 6 - permutation of the corners in the last layer
Almost done! There are 4 corner pieces left. Now we need to place them on their original places. Try to find such corner.

U R U' L' U R' U' L
Situation 1 - there is no any corner on its original place. Do the combination and you will find one!
hold on
Situation 2 - there is one corner on its original place. Red-Blue-White here.
U R U' L' U R' U' L
Situation 2a
We need to move 3 other corners counter-clockwise.
Hold the "good" corner to the right and to you.
U' L' U R U' L U R'
Situation 2b
We need to move 3 other corners clockwise.
Hold the "good" corner to the left and to you.
Tired with formulas?
Look, Situation 1 and 2a are solving with 1 formula. Situation 2b can be solved with the same formula U R U' L' U R' U' L - but you have to do it twice. No problemo!
Step 7 - the final. Orientation of the last layer corners.
All corners of the last layer are on their places. We need to orient them. Good news - we don;t need ane new formula, will use our "magic" R' D' R D. All you need is to be carefull.
Very important: hold the cube with White center on top and Red center to you to the very end!

R' D' R D
2 or 4 times

There is White-Blue-Red corner on top-right. Do the formula until the corner turn with the White on top - its final position. If the corner was "good" from the beginning - skip and go to 34.
U

Still hold the cube with White center on top, Red to you. Turn Up, so the White-Blue-Orange now is on top-right and facing you. If it is already "good" - turn Up again for the next corner un-oriented yet.
R' D' R D - 2 or 4 times then U again
Repeat 33-34 for the rest of the corners. Still hold the cube with White center on top, Red to you. The cube seemes to be broken.. keep calm and hold the cube!
Oh my God!
I've solve it!

When you have oriented all 4 corners you will see the little magic - the Rubik's Cube has been solved!

Congratulations!
